Cross-cutting theme - Cultural identity and politics in Europe
This cross-cutting theme critically and interdisciplinarily examines the foundations of European identity. Moving away from references exclusively to religion or tradition, it explores the idea that Europe's collective identity can only be political. Can we understand Europe's cultural identity without freezing a civilisational essence? The aim here is to resist the temptation of Eurocentrism without minimising Europe's cultural roots.
A sub-theme also examines how the European approach to environmental issues could contribute to a shared identity, bringing together researchers from several themes around ongoing projects.
